There are interesting places awaiting you in the embrace of the Zgornjesavska valley. Each has its own peculiarity and history. Each is proud of its rich cultural heritage and the beauties provided by nature.
The first miraculous trail can be found in the Triglav National Park – the The Triglavska Bistrica trail in the Vrata Valley is a true adventure of nature – the Peričnik and Galerij waterfalls, the upper part of the Vrata Valley and the mighty North Face of Triglav. Conquering Triglav along this face is an adventure worth taking at least two days off.
In the surroundings of Rateče, you can take the forest path towards the three-country border, among the fields to Planica and on to Tamar, to Zelenci and across the Italian border to the Mangart or Bela peč lakes.
Perhaps the most beautiful trail in the Zgornjesavska Valley is the trail leading to the Upper and Lower Martuljek waterfall. We recommend you experience them both and along the trail, you will surely be overwhelmed by the unforgettable beauty of nature and human smallness compared with the grandeur of the mighty face of the Špik mountain range.
Admire the Ajdovska deklica, the rock face of a maiden, in the face of Mount Prisank. Legend has it that she was turned into rock by the Ajdovska maidens.
You can admire the cultural heritage of the Zgornjesavska Valley already by enjoying a simple stroll through the centre of Kranjska Gora, past the Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary towards Liznjekova house.
The Kajžnkova house awaits you in Rateče, where you will get to know some of the local customs, the local national costumes and see a copy of the Rateče manuscripts dating back to the second half of the 14th century and considered one of the oldest texts in the Slovene language.
The Kot Valley offers mysterious adventures with the trail taking you across the Radovna Valley to Vintgar. There are several sights to be admired along the way: the Gogalova lipa (lime tree), Psankova sawmill and a mill and the Pocarjeva house, which is home to numerous events.
Where the road leaves the main road, leading to the village of Dovje, a monument in memory of Jakob Aljaz, the pastor and guiding force that led into better times, has been erected.
The trail to Vršič will take you past the Russian chapel built to honour the memory of those who died and serve as a reminder of the follies of war.
You will be able to dismiss these somewhat melancholic thoughts in seeing a charcoal pile being erected, a remnant of the time when life proceeded at a slower pace.
