The monument in memory of Jakob Aljaz

Where the road leaves the main road, leading to the village of
Dovje, a monument in memory of
Jakob Aljaz, the parish priest, composer and
great mountaineering enthusiast, was erected in 1989 to commemorate his post in the village from 1898 to his death in 1927.
Jakob Aljaz spent 38 years in Dovje, and he has left his mark in the history of the Slovenian people. He was one of the organisers of the mains water system in Dovje and also the founder of the Cultural Society of Dovje. He instigated the construction of a culture centre, renovated the church of St. Michael and its rectory and was
the pastor and a guiding force that led into better times. He died in 1927 in Dovje, where he is also buried.
His
walking stick, which he used when climbing the mountains, is today kept in the
Triglav Museum in Mojstrana. He will always be remembered for his great achievements and the
words engraved on his tombstone on the wall of the church of St. Michael:
"Each day, in the light of mornings’ dawn
Our peaks are all aglow -
Waiting - for your return -
You, their guardian angel:
Our "king Matjaz" of Triglav -
Priest of Dovje - Aljaz"
