The three-country border, Planica and Nadiza

The three-country border

The summit of Pec (1510 metres) above Ratece is the spot where the borders of the three neighbouring countries Slovenia, Italy and Austria meet. It is also the meeting point of three cultures: Slavonic, Romanic and Germanic. Each year the summit of Pec is the meeting place of the three peoples and it is here that the plan to mount a joint Olympic bid by three separate nations was born.

Planica

Planica, the picturesque, U shaped, glacier-made Alpine valley stretches for about 7 kilometres in a north-south direction. Undulated grounds are covered by a web of glacial moraines and the scree brought down from the surrounding mountains by torrents. The bottom section of the valley is intertwined with patches of woodland and meadows, and in certain places distinctive humped grasslands. The upper section of the valley is mainly covered with forests.

Nadiza

In Tamar, from beneath the mountain crest of the Ponce, springs the source of the river, the Sava Dolinka. Its source, which surfaces from a rock crack and flows down the rocky riverbed to the valley, is called Nadiza. It soon disappears again in the gravelly terrain only to surface again a few hundred meters lower down the valley at Zelenci.
