There is smoke coming out of charcoal piles again.

In the 19th century, charcoal burning was highly developed for the needs of ironworks. Today, this craft almost ceased to exist, since only a handful of charcoal burners are still active.

In the settlement of Gozd Martuljek, this craft is being revived within the Charcoal Burning Days at Kopišče, where you can see this interesting way of wood processing in person.

Wood put together in charcoal piles is covered with soil, where charcoal is burned for 10 to 14 days. The best is the one made from hazel.
